Finding popular times of a real-world location

I currently want to implement some way to determine how popular a location is, or its peak popular times. I know Google Maps shows this "Popular times" feature when searching a location, but it is not open via an API at the moment.

What other ways can I find out how popular a location is or when it is popular using some other API, or using other types of data to infer that?
