Is unreliable client-server networking possible on the open web?

I am in the process of developing a WebSocket HTML5 game. I have been researching other possible networking protocols which support UDP, a feature lacking in the WebSocket API. I have looked into WebRTC but this appears to only be a peer-to-peer protocol.

Does anyone have any pointers, even to planned future technologies, that could be helpful?
