How do I build a log system in a shopping website to deal with system crash?

Some times system would crash during transaction, so we need transaction log to recover data.

one seasoned friend told me to use data files instead of database. I don't get it. Is there any reason to do that way? If so, what kind of data files should I use? And what do you think is the best way to create log a system?
