the 'tempdirectory' attribute must be set to a valid absolute path

I'd like to add <compilation tempDirectory="%public%/MyApp/temp"/> to the web.config of my webservice. It reports following error during compile:

the 'tempdirectory' attribute must be set to a valid absolute path

Is it possible to specify a relative path?
