Genric Request To The Web Servers

How to write some generic request to the web servers such that i always get HTTP error 401 from the web server, if the web server has some authentication mechanism. I would be provided with a URL of a particular web sever login page, and i should manipulate the URL and make a generic request such that i always receive "401 Unauthorized" in response irrespective of the type of web server.
