How to make a visual interactive reservation web system?

I have to develop a room reservation system with a visual representation of the interior building layout which shows whether the room is available for booking or not.

However my syllabus is limited and exploring alternatives will require it to be user friendly for me to learn. Are there suggestions on developing the web system? I have learned html, php, phpmyadmin and a bit of java netbeans.
