Is there a web api that allows to catch a web application link and open it in a current opened tab if there's one?

I couldn't find anything on it, but what I'm thinking is something like in android, where a known pattern of url can be handled by an app. I would like to have that behavior in a web application in a desktop browser (preferably without having to do extra stuff) so that links are handled by an opened tab (if there's any).

Would something like that be possible?
