Difference between **Contrib Module** vs **Custom Module**

Hi. What I understand is 8 is different in terms of coding according to 7. If I write codes myself then I do not have to use Contribute Module? So for upgrade self written code from 7 to 8 I need to use Custom Module? Or am I totally wrong? Thanks
