What are the alternatives of CGI?

i read on internet that web developers used to use CGI to process input_data in programs written in languages like python. So,now what are the alternatives of CGI to process data and give response to web clients. Also i often read websites like Youtube and Facebook are running on python are they still using old methods or there is another way to use python scripts in web pages. Thanks
