How does safari reader mode work?

Safari's reader mode displays just the title, text and images from a website in a newspaper format. I want to implement something similar. How does it extract just the relevant parts of a site? Apparently, they used to use Readability, but that service shut down last year. And I would prefer not to depend on some API that might randomly shut down.
