How can I skip localhost dev environment and develop directly on dev server?

I am tired of all the work setting up vagrant, homestead, virtual box, etc on my local pc for web development. I'm also tired of local environment not matching the dev/stg/prod server environments. Is there any advice on coding directly to a remove dev server? I would also have a stage, and prod server. Idea is I would code directly on the remote dev server. Then test the code on dev server, then do pull request to push code to STG, test in STG, then push the PROD.

I will be using Laravel for first project, but may play with other things later. Git with be the source control. Prolly will be using Amazon web services for my hosting. I know Netbeans allows you to remotely edit code from your home pc box with Netbeans installed.
