python - check if a new tab was opend in the default browser

I am looking for a way to check if a new tab was opened without closing the whole browser?

I have a function that opens an HTML file as a new tab at the default browser and i want to build a unit test for it .
I have tried to close the whole browser and check if it reopened after i call the function,
but closing the browser harmed the other tests,
