Moodle - Use API to retrieve student grades from database

I have a mark book project that I am currently working on. What I want to do is using the mark book website I am going to create to retrieve student details and grades from moodle.

I want to know how I can use Moodle API to download student details and grades to my mark book site using an API or Web Services?
