Having a separate url for mobile website vs single url

Why do many websites (e.g. Facebook) have a separate url (e.g. m.example.com) for their mobile website? What advantage is there as compared to using a single url?

Note: I'm not asking why have a mobile site, but why use a separate url/subdomain for it, when multiple versions of a website can be served with a single url using PHP/Apache.
